You tell me that silence
is nearer to peace than poems
but if for my gift
I brought you silence
(for I know silence)
you would say
This is not silence
this is another poem
and you would hand it back to me.
—’Gift’, by Leonard Cohen (The Spice Box of Earth)
Silently (indeed wordlessly) I reply — yes yes.
And in hushed tones, I say ‘thank you’…
Just plain lovely.
I agree, Allison. So I wrote a companion piece for it:
You tell me that crocus
are nearer to blue than purple
but if for a bouquet
I brought you purple
(for I know purple)
you would mutter
This is not purple
this is blue… again with the bloody blue
and you would put it in a vase upside down.
