You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so, become yourself
Because the past is just a goodbye
Teach your children well
Their father’s hell did slowly go by
Because the past is just a goodbye

Their father’s hell did slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you’ll know by
Don’t you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
The one they picked, the one you’ll know by

If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you
Teach your parents well
Their children’s hell will slowly go by
And know they love you

Their children’s hell will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you’ll know by
Don’t you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
The one they picked, the one you’ll know by

If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you
Thank you for this, Carin. I didn’t know the history of that song, and I’ve always loved it, and it will have so many more layers of meaning for me now.
I initially thought the photo inspired the song, but I believe he wrote the song first then found the photo and connected the two. That there *is* a connection, though, is interesting.
You know, it’s all connected really, isn’t it? That’s what’s so heartbreaking and beautiful about life on this planet.
Too true. And I wonder why that’s so consistently and so easily forgotten… *sigh*
This is a song that has been sung in our family with our children as they grew . Donna played it at her wedding for her dad . We cry when we sing it . Nice to know someone else loves it too .
That it has such a private meaning for you is lovely, D. Tears and all.
